The 23rd. West Bengal State Science & Technology Congress 2016 (WBSSTC-2016) will be held at Presidency University, Kolkata, one of the oldest seats of higher learning in India,on 28th. and 29th. February 2016.Organized in the occasion of National Science Day,this Congress is open to all scientists and practitioners for free.

WBSSTC-2016 will embrace technical sessions, lead lectures, exhibition and science awareness programme on thematic topics of main stream science subjects. Distinguished academicians of all disciplines will grace the occasion and interact with the participants. The Congress will provide a platform to the young researchers and students to be introduced to the frontier researches of science and technology.

Presidency University welcomes all at the 23rd. WBSSTC-2016 to be a part of such a gala endeavor.

Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of West Bengal, has been organizing the ‘West Bengal State Science & Technology Congress’ for the last 22 years to spread Science Awareness amongst the mass in Bengali language. The Congress is held annually as a part of celebrating the National Science Day to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir ChandrasekharaVenkata Raman on 28 February 1928.

Original research works on main spectrum of sciences and allied subjects including social sciences like Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences and Social Sciences are invited for presentation in the congress. The inaugural session includes P. C. Mohalanobis Memorial Lecture to be delivered by an eminent Indian scientist for sharing her/his contribution in science. During the congress, State Awards are conferred in recognition of significant contribution to the development of science.Science exhibition and Science Awareness programme will be organized to promote innovative ideas.


Presidency University, Kolkata has a glorious history and venerable tradition of pursuing liberal, scientific and secular education since its establishment as the ‘Hindoo College’ in 1817, which was renamed as the ‘Presidency College of Bengal’ in 1855 and finally transformed into ‘Presidency University’ in July 2011. Science Exhibition

Participants registering for science exhibition may prepare models of dimensions of 3’ x 4’ and will be provided with a commensurate table space. They should specify additional requirements like electric connections, water pipelines and others needed for their exhibit in advance. A brief sketch of the model with the requirements should be sent in advance to the organisers for approval thorough e-mail (

Science Popularisation program for school children

The primary aim of the Congress is to attract young minds to the different disciplines of science and technology. This congress provides a suitable platform for young minds to interact freely with eminent scientists and get introduced to the recent advances in the fields of Science and technology. Attending Seminars, lectures and quiz programs organised during the congress will enthuse the fresh brains in active participation in the developments of the different faculties of science and technology. Prizes will be given to the best team in such competitions.

Abstract Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts submitted through online portal only will be accepted.
  • Abstract must be submitted both in English and Bengali version (Software for Bengali font is embedded in the submission system). For English the font should be in Times New Roman of 12 points in single spacing.
  • The abstract should have a heading in BLOCK LETTERS followed by Author names and their affiliations. Communicating authors should be clearly marked.
  • Each abstract can only be submitted under ONE category, which should be that most relevant to the topic of research.
  • Abstract once submitted cannot be edited
  • There is no limit to the number of abstract one author can submit
  • Authors are instructed to strictly adhere to the time line set.
  • All abstracts will be reviewed by the board of reviewers before giving a formal acceptance.

Abstract Format

  • The abstract should include background, methods, results, discussion and conclusion.
  • The abstract should not contain section headlines
  • Do not include tables, figures/images or references
  • The abstract should not exceed 300 words

Mode of Presentation

a) Poster presentation

The authors have to bring printed posters of size A0 (841 by 1,189 millimetres (33.1 in × 46.8 in) in landscape mode. Slots of posters will be announced in the website in due time prior to the Congress. It may be noted that there is no provision for printing the posters at the time of the Congress.

b) Oral Presentation

Abstracts selected for oral presentation will be informed to the corresponding author via mail well in advance of the Congress. The time for each presentation will be of 10 minutes including discussion. The presentation should be made in MS PowerPoint only (either as .ppt or .pptx format). The authors may send an advance copy of the presentation if desired to the organising committee prior to the Congress. The session wise schedule of presentations will be displayed in the website in due time.

Prizes will be given for the best poster and presentation during the Congress.


Notification of acceptance or rejection of abstract by the scientific committee and the mode of presentation (oral or poster) will be sent to the communicating author via e-mail by 8th. February 2016. Delegates must produce the acceptance letter at the time of registration.


Selected abstracts will be published in a volume to be distributed at the Congress.
